Authentication Alternatives to SideCar/Mac

All authentication at Cornell can be done without using SideCar/Mac. Below is more information.

Web Pages Which Require Kerberos Authentication

For web pages which require Kerberos authentication, SideCar/Mac is optional. If SideCar/Mac is not running, CUWebLogin will automatically be used.

WebDAV Shares Which Require Kerberos

Some WebDAV shares used at Cornell are configured to require Kerberos authentication. However, SideCar is no longer required. You can use kproxy.

Net-Print/Mac

You are already set. Although Net-Print/Windows requires SideCar/Windows, Net-Print/Mac does "native Kerberos", and does not require SideCar/Mac.

Usenet Newsgroups

Again, you are already set. Although the Windows news reader Gravity can use SideCar/Windows, the Mac news reader MT-Newswatcher does native Kerberos, and does not require SideCar/Mac.

CU People

CU People uses FTP to transfer files. CU People will look to see if you are running SideCar/Mac. If so, it will use Kerberos authentication. If not, your password will be sent in clear text, which is less secure than using Kerberos authentication.

There are plans to replace FTP with WebDAV for transferring files to CU People, but currently you are kind of stuck with two less than optimal choices: run SideCar/Mac or send your password in clear text.
